Obstacle Course

Each week the Nursery has focus activities that they do with the children. Last week the children completed an obstacle course in the hall. The following day the children were given the opportunity to master the course on their own. The video shows some of the morning children developing their balancing skills and using the physical equipment outside.

Gardening area - digging up the carrots!

Last year the Nursery children planted carrot seeds. The children were responsibile for looking after them and they have now grown in to carrots. Last week the children learned about harvest and the school visited the church to celebrate harvest festival. This week some of the foundation stage children decided that it was time to harvest the carrots and a group of them dug them up. This is what happened.

Anyone fancy a picnic?

The children in this short film have independently taken some resources from the home corner and made their own picnic/tea party in the blue room. They are using their own experiences and ideas to explore different family roles and extend their understanding of going on a picnic.

The nursery has had a makeover during the summer holidays and it now looks very modern and streamlined. We have a new slope and entrance and the garden area is now a large open playing area for the Foundation Stage. The nursery has also got lots of new children and they are having a fantastic time exploring the nursery and discovering what we have on offer. The children have been dressing up and playing in the home corner, experimenting with sand and water, making junk models, using the computer and metal detectors, building models using construction and lots lots more!! Keep checking our blog to find out what else we are doing!

The Seaside

We have our very own seaside role play area at Nursery. The children are building sand castles, relaxing under the beach umbrella with a cup of tea and buying ice creams from the ice cream parlour. I wonder what we will be doing at the seaside tomorrow. Watch this space to find out!

Remote Control Cars

We have been learning how to use remote control cars. We can make them go forwards, backwards, left and right. We know that the cars need batteries to make them move.

Building work!

As you might have noticed there is building work going on in the Nursery garden at the moment. We are having a slope built for the new Nursery entrance which will take shape over the Summer. The children have shown a great interest in the work and so we have planned in opportunities for the children to dig and build themselves to enable them to experience what is is like to be a builder first hand. The children have been using diggers in the sand as well as using the community bricks to build a variety of different buildings and vehicles.

Hospital Role Play

This half term the Nursery is covering the topic of keeping healthy. To help support their learning the Nursery has turned the role play area in to a hospital. There are different roles for the children to act out. They can be a doctor, nurse, patient, receptionist or visitor. The children are shown how to play each role by an adult who supports their plays and encourages them to try different roles. The children are really enjoying role playing different scenarios.

The children have been filling in patients details including their symptoms and the treatment they will be given.

Dinosaur rafts

The children have been building rafts for Dinosaurs in the environmental area. They were given different materials and guidance to build a raft for their dinosaurs and then tested them in the pond. It was a valuable experience for the children as they learnt how to problem solve with support. After the models were built they tested their rafts and made improvements before relaunching them. Have a look at our models and see what you think.

Dinosaur world - the adventure starts here!

This week we started a project on Dinosaurs. The children helped build aDinosaur World in the garden and ventured into the environmental area to find twigs and straw to keep the dinosaurs warm. The children really enjoyed building the shelters and they talked about the materials they could use and how they could join them together. It was a good problem solving activity which has resulted in a small world play area for dinosaurs and children to enjoy.

Pirates have taken over Fairlop Nursery!

This week the children have been pretending to be pirates. They have been dressing up in pirate costumes and making treasure chests to keep their treasure. Later on in the week the play developed and the children decided that they needed some pretty dresses to dress up in so the pirates could capture the princess.

Learning about numbers

We have been learning a chant about firemen to help us learn our numbers and start to understand the concept of taking away. The chant goes like this:
Five little fireman standing in a row,
1 2 3 4 5 lets go
Jump on the engine with a SHOUT,
As quick as a wink the fire is out.
Four little fireman standing in a row,
1 2 3 4 shh lets go,
Jump on the engine with a SHOUT,
As quick as a wink the fire is out.
The chant continues as above but counts down each time but replace the relevant number with a shh each time. So three fireman would have the words 1 2 3 shh shh. Have a go yourself.

Handa's Surprise - Fruit Tasting

We have been reading the book Handa's Surprise. In our group time we tasted the fruits and discussed their appearance and taste. The children then decided if they liked them or not and tried to give reasons for their answers.

Handa's Surprise - Child initiated play

We have been reading the story of Handa's Surprise. We have acted out the story using props and tasted the fruit in our groups. The children in this short film have taken some of the fruit props out of the box and are playing with them independently.
