Dinosaur rafts

The children have been building rafts for Dinosaurs in the environmental area. They were given different materials and guidance to build a raft for their dinosaurs and then tested them in the pond. It was a valuable experience for the children as they learnt how to problem solve with support. After the models were built they tested their rafts and made improvements before relaunching them. Have a look at our models and see what you think.

Dinosaur world - the adventure starts here!

This week we started a project on Dinosaurs. The children helped build aDinosaur World in the garden and ventured into the environmental area to find twigs and straw to keep the dinosaurs warm. The children really enjoyed building the shelters and they talked about the materials they could use and how they could join them together. It was a good problem solving activity which has resulted in a small world play area for dinosaurs and children to enjoy.

Pirates have taken over Fairlop Nursery!

This week the children have been pretending to be pirates. They have been dressing up in pirate costumes and making treasure chests to keep their treasure. Later on in the week the play developed and the children decided that they needed some pretty dresses to dress up in so the pirates could capture the princess.

Learning about numbers

We have been learning a chant about firemen to help us learn our numbers and start to understand the concept of taking away. The chant goes like this:
Five little fireman standing in a row,
1 2 3 4 5 lets go
Jump on the engine with a SHOUT,
As quick as a wink the fire is out.
Four little fireman standing in a row,
1 2 3 4 shh lets go,
Jump on the engine with a SHOUT,
As quick as a wink the fire is out.
The chant continues as above but counts down each time but replace the relevant number with a shh each time. So three fireman would have the words 1 2 3 shh shh. Have a go yourself.

Handa's Surprise - Fruit Tasting

We have been reading the book Handa's Surprise. In our group time we tasted the fruits and discussed their appearance and taste. The children then decided if they liked them or not and tried to give reasons for their answers.

Handa's Surprise - Child initiated play

We have been reading the story of Handa's Surprise. We have acted out the story using props and tasted the fruit in our groups. The children in this short film have taken some of the fruit props out of the box and are playing with them independently.
